From Award to Execution: Why Post-Award Management Matters

Contract award is a milestone, not a finish line. The period between award and full performance is one of the most critical — and most overlooked — phases of federal contracting. How a company manages post-award startup directly impacts contract performance, client satisfaction, and the ability to win future work.

Post-award startup includes reviewing the full contract, understanding all terms and conditions, identifying deliverables and deadlines, coordinating with subcontractors, setting up reporting and invoicing processes, and preparing for the kickoff meeting. Companies that treat startup as an afterthought often find themselves behind schedule, out of compliance, or unprepared for the operational demands of federal performance.

Effective project management during contract execution requires structure. This means establishing clear project schedules, tracking milestones and deliverables, managing communications with the contracting officer and program manager, identifying and mitigating risks, and maintaining quality assurance throughout the period of performance.

Contract administration — invoicing, reporting, modifications, compliance tracking, and closeout — is the business backbone of federal performance. Strong contract administration keeps the financial and administrative side of your contract running smoothly, reduces audit risk, and positions your company for successful past performance evaluations that support future pursuits.
